Before the WWII the world admired achievements of aviation and after it was living mainly under impression of the A-bomb. Popularity of physics became much higher than ever before. Maybe, no one among schoolchildren of the time had a dream to make A-bombs. Physics attracted everyone by something else, it promised to help to understand the world and live consciently in full harmony with it. Understanding the world itself gives new promises. The first among them is promise of some kind of power which presumably a thinking one has over those who does not think. Besides, it promises respect which, due to legends, a stupid person feels towards a clever one. And, of course, protection from those who has no intelligence.
Hence, everyone needs to understand the physical world and laws of mathematics which governs it. So, or almost so were thoughts of purposeful schoolchildren of my generation. Further, their considerations were branching out. They wishrd to see examples which show that understanding of the physical world really gives anything. This willing led some of them to question like "is there a principle due to which a stupid one is subjugated to a clever one?" The answer was somewhat conditional: no such a principle exists in an explicit form, but only those communities flourish which follow it. All the rest communities are to go to the trash. How else it can be? How else it can be, he will be learning all his life, but before he needs to enter physical faculty of a university.
They were studying high for this by solving various problems on physics and mathematics trying to avoid distractions with thoughts about who and whom will obey. They have to live in an sterile world of idealized views for a while, in a world where the Earth can be considered as a point, everything moves without friction and so on. One has to enter this world by passing entrance examinations. Those who passed will live in this world and each of them must appreciate his place in it because he has already sacrificed a lot for it.
He would take over his competitors on any other way, but he has already sacrificed these opportunities for understanding the physical world and everything this understanding promised him. Then, the only way remains ahaed, to trust those who is going to lead him forward, as he believes, towards this understanding. Yet, no doubts appeared in his mind, are they really going to do this? Still, he has not lost his dreams which led him to the physical faculty? Seldom this happens, maybe in few in thousands and not for long time. That one, mayby the only one for decades, who still did not, entered a trap where his wishes led him and will not get out until he will kill them in his mind.
