When I was a student, about 40 years ago, I tried to understand, how could it happen that theoretial physics which originally was based on one's willing to understand various phenomena, has lost this motivation completely and afterwards tried to substitute reduction of everything to some kind of symbolic grammar for it. It was clear only that this phenomenon was linked to the "new physics" where a lot of problems arose which cannot be solved any other way than by straightforward calculation. Then a new formation of theoretical physicists came, which believed that "one can understand what he cannot imagine". I asked them, what do they mean by "understand". The answer was "to understand is to calculate". Well, what else it could be for those unable to imagine anythind at all? I studied them for long time and came to conclusion that their brains operate only in discrete fields, thus, have operational dimension zero. They all are convinced followers of L.D. Landau, therefore no other kind of understanding exist for them. Hereafter I call them as "L-like" that means, first of all that their brains operate only in discrete fields and therefore they cannot imagine anything on a plane, not talking of space or space-time.
I naively believed that it is OK, everyone is free to believe in anything, they have right to believe that the world has dimension zero as they see it and I have right to believe that the world has 3+1 dimensions in accord with operational dimensions of my own brain. Let them do what they can, I will do what I want. Problems which can only be solved with use of spatial imagination did not vanish, they are just for me. They remain unsolved in various fields of theoretical physics, particularly i electrodynamics. L-like people also touch them their own way, particularly, by applying the method of Green's functions. Doing so, they create a difficult problem because, first, they hold absolute power over theoretical physics, second, no Green's functions exist in electrodynamics, and third, they are unable to understand this fact due to dimension of their brains. This fact cannot be expressed in any form they can digest, which are texts and formulas because it lies beyond all discrete fields and belongs to the world of 3 or 3+1 dimensions. Therefore all their results on the subject are erroneous but this cannot be explained them.
The upper limit of L-like people is simplification of complicated expressions. That is why did they compose an ideology which claims that all problems which could be solved analytically, have been solved long ago, therefore future of theoretical physics lies in the field of numerical and analytical calculations. Thus, if everything is as they claim, in the future only L-like people will be working in theretical physics, all the rest have no abilities to understand it. Just because to understand is to calculate and to be the best in this activity one needs only zero-dimensional brain. However, any ideology needs to be confimed. No confirmations are found in physics as it stands, so they have to falsificate it. It is not easy, for example, it leaps the eyes that Maxwell equations cannot be solved their way. So they have added a point to their ideology which reads that any electromagnetic field is combination of plane waves. It is not so, but L-like theorists are unable understand this fact.
This ideology does not just exist, it underlies certain politics which L-like people conduct in physics and beyond. Numerical superiority of this kind of theoretical physicists is both unquestioned success and a mean of this politics which allows them to supress others. One more point of their ideology reads that the only possible estimation a theoretical physicist is the number of his publications in so-called prestigeous journals. So, according to this point, neither his intellectual abilitites, nor his achievements characterize him. If, for example, he has solved a problem which was believed to be unsolvable, he can hope to get at most one publication for it, whereas an L-like one can deliver one calculation every month and nobody knows, whether he has obtained a single correct result, for all his life and nevertheless, his list of publications is hundred times longer. But everything is much worse for all authors of achievements which are impossible for L-like theorists. The point is that such an author has no chances to publish his achievement because editors of prestigeous journals play the role of hangmen whose duty is to murder authors of this sort. So, instead of publishing the result submitted to him, a typical editorof a prestigeous journal starts a stupid letters exchange using impossibility to explain him points which require his brains to have much higher dimension. Anyway, unless the result is already posted on the web and is aready known, it will be published by somebody else, who is unable not only to obtain results of this sort, but even to understand what is attributed to him. L-like people only calculate, they never obtain any interesting results and have no problevs of this sort. Their permanent problem is to find what to calculate. To provide them with this job, quantum field theory was created.
In fact, quantum field theory is an amplitude calculation method, which has little in common with a physical theory. Calculations in the framework of this "theory" were the most mass scale activity of teoretical physicists during lifetime of two after-WWII generations. The total number of amplitudes calculated hardly can be estimated, perhaps, it comes to millions or, maybe tens of millions and I heared only of one of them -- J. Schwinger's result for magnetic moment of electron, which was compared with experiment. Of course, this means for them that in all the rest cases there is full agreement of theory and experiment, but in this particular case nothing was said on how magnetic moment was measured. Nor I ever heared of use of any other result of these calculations. Hence, as far as I can see, the most mass scale activity of theoretical physicists of the time was completely useless.
I do not believe that nobody saw this. Nevertheless, I never heared of anyone who asked, what all this is for. A dark secret of the community was hidden in all this. I was thinking about it and came to the following conclusion.
The point is that L-like theoretical physicists are unable to understand physics. They are able to calculate anything, just give them formulas, they will not even ask of their meaning or if there is any. This provides them with work, the results of calculations will provide them with new publications and all together provide L-like people with power over theoretical physics. Their power is stable if this science is turned into something completely offensive for all the rest people, for this end an anti-scientific "theory" must be put onto the top of of this science, which requires everyone to complete useless and meaningless calculations without understanding.
Thus, quantum field theory, used in this capacity is not a field of scientific activity, but a mean which allowed proletariat to establish its dictatorship. This dictatorship means actually death of theoretical physics, because, as it happened, each new theory they pushed forward, was more stupid than any theory created before. In other words, each new theory was the most stupid one in history. This fact attracted my attention in mid-70s when an attempt was made to make a "star" of supersymmetry of me. As for pioneers of the theory, they were enlightened and announced that:
1. Fermi-Bose symmetry will be discovered soon
2. superpartners of all known particles will be discovered in experiments
3. a new supersymmetric quantum field theory will be presented which has no divergences.
Theory of supergravity was next to it and I saw that theory of supersymmetry was not the most stupid theory one can compose. However, its authors already have made a new promise:
4. gravity will be quantized
that, of course, never happened. Then a new theory was pushed forward. It was superstring theory, an even more stupid invention than two preceding ones. It was pointless to watch what will be next. I gave all these theories a collective name "superstupidity" and tried to understand what is happening. While I was doing this, another regularity leaped my eyes. It turns out that theories of this sort never reign for long time. At the very beginning it attracts young enthusiasts, but after a while they are disappointed and to damp them, the community pushes forward the next "theory" and urgently announces few names of "stars of theoretical physics". Those disappointed have no other way as to pass to the new field of activity which will disappoint them much more than before. Now they are more careful than before and will elevate any theory which can provide them with job. Of course, all this is shameful, neverhteless, theoretical physicists involved into this activity are represented to be "reason, honor and conscience of our epoch" (Lenin said so about communists).
